Top 10 books
Challenge games on facebook have become common. Most of them can be categorized as spams, and the rest would fall into the category of Narcissism. One of the first intellectual game I came across on facebook was to list of 10 books, books that were an influence, memory,etc
Here is a list of my 10 books that have had a major impact on me, and the reasons for it. I knew this would get lost in facebooks time line, so shall preserve it here.
1)Confessions of an economic hitman by John Perkins This book inspired me to take up activism in a whole new level. From a dormant activist I was, it pulled me into the world of blogging. It did help in building the foundations of me understanding the world.
2)A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini A beautifully written book about the friendship between two women, and how they support each other in a male dominated society.
3)Foundation series(7 books) By Isaac Asimov Sci-fi as many have categorized books of Isaac Asimov, But hidden in all the sci-fi are questions to society. Questions that arise with the technological development. This has helped me develop a temperament towards the questions of science vs society.
4)Malgudi days and Swami and friends-Short stories by R.K Narayan These are really simple short stories. One of my first reads, hence memorable.
5)The motorcycle dairies by Ernesto Che Guevara Another book I read immediately after Confessions of an economic hitman, helped the activist in me. It also helped gain a wider perspective on life.
6)The Picture of Dorian gray by Oscar Wilde There is no reason I can give for this book to be here. It was an amazing read and thats it I can say.
7)Surely You're Joking Mr.Feynman by Feynman An inspiration, Mr Feynman is. The anecdotes of Mr.Feynman compiled by himself, give an insight into his thinking.
8)The emerging mind by Vilaynur Ramachandran A fantastic book that gives an insight into the working of the brain. The book did not have a direct effect on me, but it did get me fascinated to learn more about the brain.
9)Namma oorina rasikaru by Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar A classic book, It was part of our syllabus in high school. It picked up social problems in our society and presented it as a story. The story of a village. I cannot say for sure if it was the book or the teacher that made the impact. Many a times, I am reminded of various instances from the book that help me take decisions in life.
10)The white tiger by Aravind Adiga This was a well written story, It did not have anything special in it. As this was a book that again accelerated my interest in reading it is on the list.
